Medical Marijuana for Muscle Spasticity & Spasms
Muscle spasticity is a condition characterized by involuntary muscle contractions or spasms that can cause stiffness, tightness, and/or difficulty in movement and pain.
Muscle spasticity may be caused by something simple, such as long-term desk work, but it may also be a manifestation of various medical conditions. Spasms can occur in various parts of the body, including the arms, legs, and back, oftentimes causing pain or discomfort. This may cause significant discomfort, distracting people from daily activities including work and leisure. While it is important to continue management of the underlying condition with your primary doctor, studies have shown that medical cannabis can be effective in treating the symptoms of muscle spasticity, resulting in decreased tightness and improved range of motion, quality of sleep, and function.
Studies have shown that the cannabinoid, THC, can bind with cannabinoid receptors in the body to initiate an anti-inflammatory response that can help prevent inflammation and muscle spasms. Cannabis plants contain over 400 secondary metabolites, two of which are the most bioactive: THC and cannabidiol (CBD). THC is the psychoactive component responsible for the “high” associated with marijuana, while CBD does not produce a high but can produce relaxation or sleepiness. For each patient, the proper balance of cannabinoids can help calm spasms and allow for more freedom of movement in the arms and legs, and can also reduce stress, anxiety, and depression associated with daily physical problems as well as improve sleep.
The pain management medical team at THC has extensive experience treating muscle spasticity and muscle spasms associated with a variety of medical diseases, conditions, and injuries.
